Yet, if we truly want to find the Essential Jesus we must be willing to allow his sermon to soak deep into our soul. For the next 6 weeks, we are going to let His sermon fall on us like Portland rain. No umbrellas needed. Simply bring your Bibles and allow His essential word reign!

The Essential Jesus Sermon Series – A Very High Bar

Pastor Dave Sorensen – “The Essential Jesus: A Very High Bar”
Matthew 5:17-48

So, do you think you have it? Do you think you measure up to God’s laws? The fact is, we don’t—and none of us can. The bar is so high! In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus doesn’t water down God’s laws to make it easier on us, He actually raises the bar. Are you holding on to any false hopes that you measure up? Hope not! With our sin, we don’t measure up. Can you satisfy the laws? No—only Jesus can. Pr. Dave asks us to go to Jesus and commit to Him. He will help us live out our lives. Pr. Dave gave us four points to consider:

1. Give up. Give up trying to measure up – you can’t.
2. ‘Fess up. He came to forgive, so ‘fess up.
3. Take up. Take up His invitation to enter His kingdom.
4. Take in. Take in Jesus every day!

Pr. Dave challenged us all this week to make Jesus a part of every thought and decision. Imagine if we did that—how might that change us? We can’t do it on our own, we must have Jesus!

Matthew 5:1-16

We cover up what God IS by our actions. To get back to what he IS like, we need only to get in the Word. What and how did He teach? Today’s lesson is on the Sermon on the Mount – the B-attitudes. Phillip Yancy was quoted as saying, “Lucky are you . . .” Pr. Dave told the story of his high school soccer coach – one who wouldn’t play him because he wasn’t a team player. Yes, he could score a lot of goals, but he wouldn’t pass the ball. Another coach knew the right thing to say at the right time to get Dave to do what was needed on the field.

Many of the Apostles got a glimpse of what Jesus was LIKE when they heard this Sermon on the Mount. Did He say, “Blessed are the Victorious!” or “Blessed are the Good Looking.” Or “Blessed are the Rich.”? No – He knew what was in the hearts of his listeners, and he knows what is in our hearts.

He knew many would die following Him, and like a good coach, knows how to encourage us.

The Gospel goes on to talk about how we need to be the Salt of the earth – that little bit of spice that encourages others to want what Jesus can give. If we let our light (which is His Light) shine and don’t hide it under a bushel – others will see Christ through us.

We are to read the Beatitudes daily – one at a time. May we be encouraged – May we be that Salt & Light.
